Wary of potential retaliation from the Trump administration, NATO staff have started watering down language on climate. Politico reports that phrases concerning climate, women and security have been reworded in new NATO legislation. Anonymous NATO officials said that phrases such as “green technologies” and “climate” have allegedly been replaced with “innovative technologies” and an “operational environment.” NATO’s climate advisers (who provide military staff with advice on environmental challenges during times of war) have been left unscathed. On the other hand, officials are completely avoiding any language on gender, women, peace and security. As one of the officials put it: “Everyone knows that the worst thing you can do is present it as a diversity issue. It’s not a woke agenda, it’s part of a military agenda, and now more people are pricking up their ears to make sure it is spoken about in military terms.”
