At the recent Spring Meeting, the World Bank announced a goal to bring electricity to 250 million people in Africa by 2030. The African Development Bank has stated that it would do so for an additional 50 million people. The World Bank will have to double its spending on energy access, utility reform, power generation, transmission, and distribution in order to reach the goal. lt may also need more money to come to fruition. A separate G20 ministers meeting during the Spring Meetings discussed a proposal from Brazil (the current G20 chair) to address inequality and tackle poverty by taxing the super rich. A task force also met to discuss ways to raise funds towards sustainable development and climate action, including the introduction of levies on fossil fuel producers and aviation maritime fishing.
