Liberia Fast Tracking Contentious Carbon Market Framework

Liberian policymakers are almost done with the nation’s framework for carbon credits. But local NGOs are apparently dissatisfied, according to Mongabay, as the feel shut out of a fast-tracked final review of the policy. According to the previous version, communities would stand to obtain at most 50% of the revenue, however, civil societies object to this amount, particularly where communities own the land outright.  Dayugar Johnson of the NGO Coalition objecting to the policy stated, if a community owns something 100%,  “why should 50% come to me?” . However government has stated that the draft includes free and prior informed consent as a core policy, and that civil society groups have had ample opportunities to comment on it.
