Gabon’s Transition President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, seized power in 2023 after a coup. Before announcing his intention earlier this week to hold national elections, he made a speech that outlined three government priorities, one of which was an environmental pact . He stated (in translation) “Gabon, as a leader in forest preservation, must continue its commitment to a green economy that creates sustainable jobs. This pact must reflect a bold vision where the protection of our natural heritage is combined with economic growth for the benefit of future generations.” Measures announced to strengthen the country’s commitments under the Paris Agreement include the development of a national carbon registry, a levy on GHG emissions for aviation as well as maritime emissions from ships in the Republic.
