Over 100 countries call for extension to World Bank Climate Plan

A bloc of developing-country shareholders at the World Bank has circulated a letter calling for the bank’s flagship climate plan to be extended for another year — a sign of mounting resistance to U.S. efforts to weaken the Bank’s climate commitments. According to a document seen by Devex, the letter (sent to the board by the so-called G11+ group of borrower-country executive directors) asks for an extension of the Bank’s current Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) while an independent review evaluates the framework’s performance, targets, and trade-offs. The letter was signed by 12 group heads representing almost 100 countries and was reportedly organised by Brazil and China. Its backers include Saudi Arabia, China, and Russia, with advocates suggesting that the U.S. is becoming increasingly isolated in opposing an extension of the climate plan.
