According to the Guardian, multimillion UK programmes aimed at protecting nature and the climate particularly in Africa and Asia are likely to be substantially reduced or completely axed, despite governmental assurances that the country is fulfilling climate finance obligations. The budget cuts have not been publicly disclosed as yet, but reporting suggests that it would include cuts to and partial closure of the £100m Biodiverse Landscapes Fund; COAST, a coastal project geared at addressing climate and ocean adaptation has undergone cuts, and possible cuts to the £500m Blue Planet Fund. This comes after news that the UK plans to reduce its climate finance pledges to developing countries by a fifth. A group of civil society organisations have written to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, asking him to increase climate funding by taxing fossil fuel producers.
