Energy, climate and environment ministers from G7 member states have announced that the bloc would end the use of ‘unabated’ coal by 2035. However, this agreement leaves room for countries to continue using coal past the 2035 deadline if their national emissions don’t exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement. All the members of the G7 still include coal in their energy production, with France, the United Kingdom, Canada and Italy reducing their use of coal. Climate experts and scientists have welcomed the announcement but there are still concerns that the 2035 end date will miss the deadline to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
