The Gambia validates Draft Carbon Trading Bill

The Gambia’s Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources has validated the draft of the Carbon Trading Bill, a framework for the country’s framework for sustainable development and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The draft bill outlines targets for the creation of a national carbon registry and trading platform for carbon credits. The Ministry hopes that the Gambia can bank on its forests and mangroves to benefit from a carbon trading scheme. Speaking to The Gambia Journal, DPS Bubacarr Zaidi Jallow believes that the draft bill could be a step in the right direction for the country’s climate action plan: “it (carbon trading) can help The Gambia meet its international climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change, and stimulate economic growth by creating new jobs and investment opportunities in the clean energy sector.”
