Southern African Alliance on Carbon Markets established

Representatives from Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe have officially launched the Southern Africa Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance at an event held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The launch is a culmination of a year-long process of formalising the Alliance since a meeting on its establishment was held in December 2024. The creation of the Alliance is in response to the need for regional coordination, capacity building and international collaboration on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and effective participation in global carbon markets. Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) is supporting the establishment and operationalisation of the Alliance. Other supporting partners and institutions include the Article 6 Implementation Partnership, the African Union Development Agency–NEPAD, UNFCCC RCC for Eastern and Southern Africa, UNEP and UNDP. More partners are expected to come onboard as the Alliance begins its operations.
