South African Energy Minister challenges carbon tax

South Africa’s Energy and Electricity Minister Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is said to be pushing for a suspension of the country’s carbon tax. Amid rising electricity costs and limited low carbon electricity alternatives, some argue that the tax is not achieving its objectives. First introduced in 2019, the tax is a central component of the government’s mitigation measures to achieve net zero by 2050. The tax is due to increase progressively with set tax increases and less exclusions up until 2030. The National Treasury has reportedly been asked by the President to put forward a detailed explanation and rationale for the tax.
