SADC MPs call for more climate legislation in the region

Namibia hosted the second meeting of the Southern Africa Regional Parliamentarians’ Forum on Climate Change. Held from 31 July to 2 August, the meeting convened SADC’s chairpersons and Members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committees on Environment, Climate Change, Agriculture, and Natural Resources, and focused on “Strengthening Oversights in Climate Action Accountability and Reporting.” In a communique published at the end of the Forum, the MPs and chairpersons called for more collaboration between SADC countries to improve legislative and oversight functions, and for more cooperation between the portfolio committees and government. The Parliamentarians highlighted the need for climate legislation, as well as recommending the creation of climate-focused parliamentary caucuses within national and regional legislatures.
