BRICS welcomed five new members in early 2024, with reported plans to continue expanding membership under the current Russian presidency. One of Africa’s big three economies (with Egypt and South Africa already members of BRICS), Nigeria’s potential BRICS membership would have political, diplomatic and economic impacts. Professor Williams Ijoma outlined the case for membership at a summit under the theme ‘BRICS + and Global South: Problems and Prospects’. “Nigeria has got all it takes to be a world power. We have the raw materials and we have the human resources and I believe that joining BRICS will boost Nigeria’s economy,” says Ijoma. However, Nigeria will have to consider its national interests and diplomatic relations before making a decision.
