New NDCs Have Low Commitments to Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels

A recent study by climate change think tank E3G has found that only 10 of the 22 countries that submitted new NDCs reaffirmed their commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels. The report, compiled in collaboration with international research group Zero Carbon Analytics, also notes that progress differs among the countries: the United Kingdom phased out coal in 2024, with the Marshall Islands, Switzerland, the UAE and Uruguay also coal-free. New NDCs from Japan, Singapore and Moldova recognise the priorities outlined in the GST of phasing down coal and transitioning away from fossil fuels, but this may not translate into tangible action. Japan itself has regressed on commitments to reduce funding fossil fuels. As part of the Powering Past Coal Alliance, 10 countries aim to phase out unabated coal power generation. Of the countries with commitments to phase out unabated coal power, Singapore aims to do so after 2025, Canada, New Zealand and the US by 2030, and Montenegro by 2040.
