Minister from the UAE calls for a phase out of oil and gas

Climate Home has reported that the United Arab Emirates’ environment minister Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri has called for the phaseout of oil and gas. The complete phase-out of oil and gas proved to be too contentious to agree to at either COP26 or COP27, with a handful of oil and gas producing nations opposing it. The proposal is likely to remain contentious at COP28. Almheiri reportedly told the Munich Security Conference: “We need the oil and gas sector to be with us. We need to shift the way they are doing business and we need to decarbonise what they are doing. We need to then phase out oil and gas in a just way.”
