Liberia to address sensitivities with its new maritime and aviation carbon levy

Liberia announced that airlines and maritime operators serving Liberia will have to pay a carbon contribution of $25 dollars per tonne of CO₂, as part of its launch of its Sovereign Carbon Initiative. The charge will come into effect on 1 March 2026. The Initiative establishes a national compliance mechanism inspired by the EU ETS and requires the companies involved to measure, report, and reduce their carbon footprint. Carbon Pulse reports that, according to a top official the mechanism has been misunderstood and will be revised to remove sensitivities.
