Kenya plans large tax breaks for EVs

Kenya announced plans for tax incentives aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles. The incentives are part of the National Electric Mobility Policy, which aligns the transport sector with Kenya’s climate commitments. Kenya has previously introduced targeted incentives, including a zero Value Added Tax (VAT) on electric buses, bicycles, motorcycles and lithium-ion batteries, and lower excise duties on selected EVs. The new incentives will include exemptions for VAT and excise duties starting from July 2026.
