Gabonese Carbon Contribution Mechanism to now include offsets

A year after its official launch, Gabon’s Sovereign Carbon Initiative has entered a new phase, adding a new mechanism that will include an offsetting component. This complements the mandatory contribution introduced a year earlier. Parties to the Initiative will now have to offset part of their emissions through the acquisition of carbon credits from certified projects, with priority to those developed in Gabon. The country’s initiative is part of the Africa Sovereign Carbon Initiative (ASCI), which applies a levy of  $17 per tonne on the half of the carbon footprint for international aviation and maritime transport to/from Gabon. This levy aims to fund national sustainable development, reforestation, and achieving climate goals.
