G20 Working Meeting on Development focuses on Social Protection, Finance for Development and Illicit Financial Flows

At the end of January the South African presidency of the G20 hosted the first 2025 G20 Development Working Group (DWG) meeting, aimed at tackling global development challenges. A key focus of the meeting was the growing finance gap for achiving the SDGs, the need for enhanced social protections and the importance of scaling illicit financial flows. The DWG acknowledged the need for additional, at scale and predictable finance for sustainable development and to achieve the SDGs, especially in Africa and developing countries. Speakers underscored the need for strengthened regulatory frameworks and international cooperation to enhance national capacities to address illicit financial flows. The meeting concluded with a clear commitment to tackling the interconnected challenges of social protection, financing for development, and illicit financial flows.
