Under the G20 Presidency, the South African government has announced the creation of an Africa Expert Panel. In line with the G20 Presidency’s stated intention to prioritise African policy challenges, the Panel will consider matters specifically related to African countries, namely high levels of debt. As per a governmental media statement, the Panel will “offer strategic advice by exploring and defining strategies that advance Africa’s collective developmental interests through increased voice, effective representation, and the achievement of a reformed and all-inclusive global economic policy through the G20.” The Panel’s 23 members include former Governor of the Kenya Reserve Bank Patrick Njoroge, former Chief Economist at the World Bank and Director of the Paris School of Economics François Bourguignon, Trevor Manuel (Chairperson of Old Mutual Board), Hannah Ryder (Chief Executive Officer: Development Reimagined) and Fiona Tregenna (Professor of Economics, University of Johannesburg). The Africa Expert Panel will produce a High-Level Report with its key recommendations.
