Draft G20 Climate Communique Omits Promise to Transition Away from Fossil Fuels

According to an article in the Guardian, the undertaking to ‘transition away from fossil fuels’ made at COP28 last year, has been left out of the current G20 draft communique on climate change. Leaked documents reportedly show that while the first draft had such a commitment, the second does not. Instead, there is a vague reference to the pledge, through a reference to “the goals set forth” in the COP28 outcome, which include the commitment to transition away. Civil society campaigners have said that this is a red flag that nations are walking back their commitments. The G20 meeting will take place on 18-19 November 2024, towards the end of COP29 which ends on 22 November.
