BRICS Nations Push Back on Unilateral Measures and Establish Carbon Market Partnership

The BRICS Group has historically pushed hard against so-called “unilateral” climate measures introduced by developed countries on the pretence of climate action but which they believe are protectionist measures. In the latest Kazan Declaration from the BRICS IVX Summit in Russia, the group “condemn[ed] unilateral measures introduced under the pretext of climate and environmental concerns and reiterate our commitment to enhancing coordination on these issues.” The Group also concluded an MoU on the “BRICS Carbon Markets Partnership” as a platform dedicated to sharing knowledge, experiences and case studies of developing carbon markets and discussing the potential intra-BRICS cooperation on carbon markets. It will also operate to exchange views on potential cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement among the BRICS countries.
