BRICS Ministers align themselves with G77 position on Climate and reject linking of security with climate issues.

In a June meeting held in Nizhny Novgorod, the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs/International Relations reiterated their support for ambitious climate action and an acceleration of the sustainable development agenda. In a joint statement, the Ministers called for developed countries to honour climate finance pledges to support developing countries, supported discussions towards a new collective quantified goal on climate finance prior to 2025 and reaffirmed their commitment to and belief in the UNFCCC process. They argued that the UNFCCC is the most appropriate to discuss the issue of climate change, rejecting calls to link security with climate change issues. The statement also opposed restrictive measures on trade as a pretext for addressing climate change, hinting at disagreements over the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
