As of December 2025, the Nigerian government imposed a nationwide ban on the exportation of wood, charcoal, and related products to curb deforestation and environmental degradation. The country’s National Association of Charcoal Producers, Dealers, Exporters and Afforestation of Nigeria (NACPDEAN) has called for urgent and coordinated engagement following the ban. Its President Edu Babatunde called for structured engagement with government and the establishment of a sustainable framework that balances economic survival with environmental responsibility, noting that an era of strict compliance was imminent. The organisation is focusing on supporting afforestation, with a view to creating a more enabling environment for sustainable charcoal production and export activities.
