The World Economic Forum’s 2026 Global Risks Report shows that climate change is no longer viewed as the biggest risk to security, now falling behind geoeconomic confrontation and state-based armed conflict. This shift in priorities is reflected at this year’s gathering in Davos. Unlike previous editions where addressing climate change was a priority item on the agenda, this year’s focus is on resilience building and adaptation. Political considerations, namely the USA’s new climate policies under President Donald Trump, have influenced this shift. Speaking to Politico, former Colombian deputy minister of the environment Nicolás Galarza said that the new approach is a compromise. “It’s middle ground, to avoid confrontation with Trump,” says Galarza, adding that it strikes a balance between raising awareness on biodiversity and avoiding overly political messaging.
